Becoming a teaching artist.

The B.F.A. in Art and Design Education prepares you to be an innovative, dynamic, teaching artist for diverse learners across a range of educational settings.

Learn a range of ways to make, present, interpret and teach art, as well as how to collaborate across a variety of disciplines and communities in the process. Upon graduation you are eligible for New York State certification in visual arts education.

Our graduates are working in:

  • Pre-K through 12 public, private and charter schools
  • Museum education programs
  • Community-based organizations
  • Other creative endeavors in the arts

The Curriculum

  • A range of Art and Design Studio Courses
  • Art and technology including STEAM, Animation and other time based media
  • Community Arts
  • Fieldwork and student teaching opportunities in schools, museums, and after-school programs – Long Island, NYC and internationally.
  • Individual studio spaces for students pursuing self-directed projects.
  • Opportunities to exhibit work in one of four university galleries.
  • Study abroad including Community Arts in Kosovo and Renaissance Art in Florence, Italy
  • Advocating for the arts in a global and culturally diverse world
